How to Plan an African Honeymoon
An African honeymoon is not a standard safari with champagne added. It is a different kind of trip, one where the lodge, the privacy, and the rhythm of the day matter as much as the wildlife. The wrong lodge, too social, too open, too many other couples in shared spaces, undermines the purpose of the trip regardless of what it costs per night.
After arranging honeymoon travel since 2002, we have learned that the couples who enjoy it most are the ones who understand what they are choosing and plan accordingly. This guide covers Africa's finest honeymoon destinations, how to combine safari with beach, golf, or city, and the practical details that make the difference between a good trip and a great one.
What Makes a Honeymoon Safari Different
A safari lodge that works brilliantly for a group of friends or a family is not necessarily the right choice for a honeymoon. The differences are subtle but they matter.
Privacy is the primary design brief. A private plunge pool on the suite's deck, ideally with a waterhole or open landscape view. A private outdoor shower or bath. A deck large enough to sit on with drinks without being visible from other suites. Physical seclusion from other guests is what separates a honeymoon lodge from a merely excellent one.
Service calibration. Staff who are present when needed and invisible when not. A honeymoon is not a time for constant manager check-ins or arranged in-room gift delivery photo opportunities. The best lodges provide comfort and response without intrusion. You should feel looked after without ever feeling watched.
Food and beverage. A lodge that provides a private dinner setup in the bush or on the suite's deck, on request, for honeymoon guests. Most lodges in the premium tier will accommodate this if informed in advance. The best lodges offer it without being asked. A private bush breakfast after a dawn game drive, or a candlelit dinner under the stars with no other table in sight, is the kind of moment that defines a honeymoon safari.
The wildlife still matters. Romance does not replace the safari. You are still waking at 5:30am for a game drive, still scanning the bush for movement, still holding your breath when a lion appears at the waterhole. The difference is that you return to a suite designed for two, not a room you happen to share.
Choosing Your Honeymoon Style
Every couple is different, and the right honeymoon depends on what you both want. Some want pure wilderness and solitude. Others want a beach to collapse on after the intensity of the bush. Some want golf on the itinerary. The options we offer fall into five categories.
Pure safari. Three to five nights in a private game reserve, with morning and afternoon drives, sundowners in the bush, and evenings at the lodge. This is the classic format, and it works best when both partners are genuinely excited about wildlife. Sabi Sand in South Africa, the Masai Mara in Kenya, and the Serengeti in Tanzania are the strongest options.
Safari and beach. The most popular honeymoon format. Safari first, then a beach extension, or the other way around. Mauritius, Seychelles, and Mozambique all offer the Indian Ocean counterpoint to the bush. The rhythm changes completely: early mornings become lazy ones, game drives become snorkelling sessions, and the soundtrack shifts from lions to waves.
Safari and golf. For couples where at least one partner plays golf, combining safari with a few rounds on world class courses adds another dimension to the trip. South Africa, Mauritius, and the Seychelles all offer this combination without either experience feeling compromised.
Safari and city. Cape Town and the Winelands as a post-safari extension. Wine tasting, fine dining, Table Mountain, and the sophisticated energy of one of Africa's most beautiful cities. This works particularly well as a three or four night add-on after a safari in the Kruger region.
Train travel. Rovos Rail offers the romantic train journey through Africa. Vintage carriages, world class cuisine, and landscapes that unfold past your window like a film. Safari and Beach Combinations
The safari and beach format solves a common honeymoon dilemma: how to combine adventure with relaxation. The bush is thrilling but intense. You need a few days afterwards to process what you have seen, to sleep late, to do nothing. The Indian Ocean islands off Africa's east coast deliver exactly that.
Mauritius
Mauritius is the most accessible beach extension from a South African safari. Direct flights from Johannesburg take around four hours, and the island offers a range of luxury resorts with pristine beaches, world class spas, and excellent dining. For couples who play golf, Mauritius is a revelation. The Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort and Spa sits on a private peninsula beneath the UNESCO listed Le Morne Brabant, with an 18 hole championship course that wraps around the lagoon. Constance Belle Mare Plage offers two championship courses, The Legend and The Links, along a two kilometre beach on the east coast. Seychelles
The Seychelles offer a more secluded alternative to Mauritius. The islands are smaller, the beaches more dramatic, and the atmosphere more intimate. Constance Lemuria on Praslin is home to the only 18 hole championship golf course in the Seychelles, set among granite boulders and tropical forest with views across the Indian Ocean. The course is demanding but spectacular, and the resort itself offers the kind of barefoot luxury that suits a honeymoon perfectly.
For couples who want to island hop, the Seychelles chain includes Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue, each with its own character. The Seychelles Golf Club on Mahé offers a nine hole course for a more relaxed round. Mozambique

A typical honeymoon combines three or four nights on safari in the Serengeti with four or five nights in Zanzibar. Safari and Golf for Two
Golf and safari share more than you might think. Both demand patience, an early start, and a willingness to accept that the outcome is not entirely in your hands. Combining them on a honeymoon works because the rhythm of the day accommodates both: morning game drive, midday downtime, afternoon tee time.
South Africa offers the strongest golf safari combination. Leopard Creek Country Club, on the border of the Kruger National Park, is the most thrilling golf experience on the continent. Gary Player designed the course in 1996, and the Crocodile River runs along several holes with the Kruger bush on the far bank. Hippos are often visible in the water, and the distraction of a distant elephant moving through the treeline is not uncommon. The Paradis Beachcomber, Constance Belle Mare Plage, and Heritage golf resorts all offer stay and play packages where golf, meals, and spa treatments are bundled together. The non golfer is never left waiting: while one partner is on the course, the other has the beach, the pool, and the spa. The day expands rather than contracts.
The Seychelles offer Constance Lemuria on Praslin as the sole 18 hole championship option. It is a more intimate setting than Mauritius, and the resort's smaller scale suits a honeymoon where privacy matters more than variety.
Cape Town and the Winelands
Cape Town works as a post safari extension for couples who want city culture, fine dining, and wine after the intensity of the bush. Three or four nights is usually sufficient. The highlights include wine tasting in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, where estates like Delaire Graff and La Motte offer cellar tours and restaurants among the most acclaimed in the country. A drive along the Cape Peninsula to Cape Point, a visit to the penguin colony at Boulders Beach, and a sunset from Table Mountain round out the experience.
For golfers, the Cape Town area offers several top courses. Steenberg Golf Club, the only estate course on the Cape Peninsula, and Clovelly Country Club, set against the slopes of the Silvermine mountain range, are both within easy reach of the city centre.
Cape Town is best visited from October to April, when the days are long and the weather is warm. Combined with a winter safari in the Kruger (June to September), it creates a trip that spans both of Africa's seasons.
Rovos Rail
Rovos Rail offers the romantic train journey through Africa. The company operates vintage carriages, rebuilt and restored to a standard that competes with the finest hotels, along routes that include the journey from Pretoria to Cape Town, the trip to Dar es Salaam through Tanzania, and the trail through Zimbabwe to Victoria Falls.
The train carries a maximum of 72 passengers, and the atmosphere is deliberately old world: wood panelled suites, white tablecloth dining, and an observation car where you can sit with a drink and watch the landscape change. Game drives are arranged at stops along the route, and the pace is unhurried. The Pretoria to Cape Town journey takes two days and covers 1,600 kilometres, passing through the semi arid Karoo and the dramatic wine growing regions of the Western Cape.
For honeymooners, Rovos Rail works as a standalone trip or as an extension to a safari. Two nights on the train between a safari in the Kruger and a few days in Cape Town creates a journey that covers the full spectrum of what South Africa offers. When to Book and When to Go
Honeymoon planning requires more lead time than a standard safari, particularly if you are travelling during peak season.
Peak season (June to September) is the best time for safari across most of Africa, and it is when honeymoon lodges are at their busiest. For Sabi Sand, the Masai Mara, and the Serengeti, book nine to twelve months in advance. Top lodges like Singita, Londolozi, and &Beyond properties sell out early, and last minute availability is rare.
Green season (November to April) offers better availability and lower rates, with the added benefit of newborn animals and dramatic landscapes. The trade off is thicker bush and harder game viewing, but the romantic atmosphere of a green season safari, with the lodge to yourselves and the bush alive with new life, is genuinely special.
Beach extensions work year round, though Mauritius and the Seychelles are best from May to November when rainfall is lowest and temperatures are comfortable. Mozambique is best from May to November as well, with clear water and calm seas ideal for diving and snorkelling.
Golf on the South African courses is best from May to September, when the fairways are firm and the weather is dry. Mauritius golf is playable year round, though the summer months (November to April) bring higher humidity and occasional rain.

Honeymoon Planning Tips
Tell your lodge. Always inform your lodge at time of booking that you are on honeymoon. Most premium properties will arrange a private dinner or in suite experience if notified in advance. Some do this as a standard inclusion. Do not assume it happens automatically. A brief note when you book, or a call to the lodge a week before arrival, ensures the team is prepared.
What to pack. Neutral coloured clothing works for both safari and city. A fleece or warm layer is essential for early morning game drives, even in summer. Lightweight, breathable clothing for the beach days. Golf clubs travel easily, but confirm your airline's policy on sports equipment. A wide brimmed hat, sunscreen, and binoculars are the other non-negotiables. We send a detailed packing list with every booking.
Malaria precautions. Much of sub Saharan Africa is a malaria area, and the Kruger, the Masai Mara, and the Serengeti all fall within the risk zone. Consult a travel health clinic four to six weeks before departure to discuss prophylaxis. Use insect repellent containing DEET and cover up at dawn and dusk. Malaria risk is highest during the warm, wet months from November to April. If malaria is a concern, the Eastern Cape of South Africa is malaria free, and Seychelles carries no malaria risk at all.
Budget guidance. A mid range honeymoon safari with beach extension, seven to ten nights, typically costs between £4,000 and £6,000 per person. This includes internal flights, a mix of good lodges and hotels, and most meals. A luxury version, with Singita or similar in Sabi Sand, a premium beach lodge, and internal flights, starts at around £8,000 per person and can exceed £15,000 for a two week trip. The main cost drivers are the level of safari accommodation and the beach resort chosen. We are transparent about costs and never inflate lodge rates.
